I did not think Rachel McAdams' Mean Girls role was especially breakout but if she was the lead in The Notebook (which I didn't see) I'm happy to remove her from my list. Anyway... Nominations are closed. I will hopefully put up the shortlist tonight. |

After Mean Girls I knew Rachel McAdams as the meanest mean girl, but after The Notebook I knew her as Rachel McAdams. That puts her breakout as The Notebook for me. But doc's right, it's a very subjective category, and that's okay. AboutFilm President and Sugar Daddy (www.aboutfilm.com); OFCS Member (www.ofcs.org)

Quick notes before I retire (1.15am here). Ledger polled a number of votes for Breakthrough so we'll let the voters decide. I treated any adapted/original screeplay confusion as I would lead/supporting. Those categories with 6 are where there was a tie for 5th. Doc and animated film have been top 3 for at least 2 years. Voting instructions to follow tomorrow. |

I don't understand William Hurt making the cut. Ed Harris was scary and grimly funny in A History of Violence, whereas Hurt was just puffed up and ridiculous (a big reason why that section of the film left me disappointed). Also, it's too bad that Crash made it into the Best Pic category, but on the bright side it probably has a better chance at Biggest Turkey. But overall, way to go, people. I particularly like the Cinematography category--there are five very different (and very beautifully shot) films in that group. |

Really, guy? I loved Hurt's scene-stealing turn. He was a riot. Harris was good, but it's a little gimmicky for my tastes. My thoughts on our nominations (certain to be better than those nominations announced tomorrow morning). 1. Ick on the (expected) love for Sin City. The worst nomination has to be the Sin City ensemble. Come on, there is some flat out bad acting in that film, so I fail to see how it could get an ensemble nom. Also, that Spielberg nomination is pretty generous. 2. The Linney as lead actress and Daniels as supporting makes no sense. Granted, it probably happened for logistical reasons: the leading actor and supporting actress categories are too crowded. But, still, Linney and Daniels are either both leads or both supporting. If anything, Daniels would be a lead performance and Linney a supporting. 3. The Supporting Actor category exactly matches who I nominated! 4. Ziyi and Adams in the supporting actress category! (and Bello and Williams! -- but those were expected). 5. I don't think I'm exactly an expert on what art direction entails, but our nominees seem a little "off" to me (as if art direction and special effects are the same thing). I'm talking about King Kong (and maybe Batman Begins and Sin City) in particular. 6. I definitely think Ledger should stay as Breakthrough (he was #1 on my list). I mean, compare him to Terrence Howard. Howard has been doing quality work for years and we are calling this his breakthrough? What had Ledger done up until Brokeback? To my eyes he had shown little to no talent up until then, and shattered any notion that he's talentless with that performance. 7. Crash as Best Picture and Biggest Turkey. Interesting indeed. Definitely a love-it or hate-it kind of picture (although I'd consider myself somewhere in the middle). |

Uuugh! I just saw JUNEBUG, and I am now more pissed than ever that I wasn't able to rent it on Saturday before the f**king voting deadline, because it would have been in many categories for me! Picture, Actress (Embeth Davidtz), Screenplay, Ensemble, and, DUH, Supp. Actress. Thank god Adams made the cut without my vote, because I would have never forgiven myself! I think this is the most breathtaking female breakthrough since (gasp!) Naomi Watts in MULHOLLAND DR., and, if it's not my favorite performance of the year, it's definitely one of my top 3. What a f**king amazing character! Thanks to whoever voted for her, wish I coulda joined you...lol! Oh, and YAY on the (not that expected by me) love for SIN CITY!!!

You should definitely rent Downfall - its out in the UK so I'd be surprised if it isn't in the States. Anyway... (Assuming your still okay to do this Kathy?!) Voting is now open. Voting is by seceret ballot to kathy@krawczyk.com Voting is weighted. You should rank your top 3 in each category from the final list of nominees above. Your top pick receives 3 points, your second 2 and your third 1. If you haven't seen all of the nominees, don't worry - you should still vote - your votes will be weighted accordingly. For example if you rank two of the Best Supporting Actresses, your top pick will receive 2 points, and your second pick 1. Voting closes Monday February 6, 2006; 23:59 Eastern Time

Very annoyingly didn't see many foreign films this year and have only seen 2 of the nominees. Loved Downfall. Liked Oldboy. Kings and Queen is at the top of my rental queue on your advice Jeff. I was reluctant to see 2046 without having seen In the Mood for Love so skipped it. Wanted to rent Tropical Malady but it wasn't listed on the DVD rental site I use. Downfall racked up 10 nominees which is probably the most but I can't be arsed to check! |

Well quite possibly though didn't you compare one of them to Mulholland Dr.. I loved that so you never know. At any rate I hope they are better than the abysmal Cache. Why on earth was that on the top of my must-see list? Just a dreadful exercise in stationary camera, scoreless tedium. More thoughts on What Movie board if I can be bothered. |

My only problem with that is there is only one nominee that fits the Berlin bunker theme, whereas at least three major contenders (Brokeback Mountain, A History of Violence, Walk the Line) would suggest some American heartland locale - possibly a smalltown western karaoke bar. Either that, or just pick a theme site that doesn't directly relate to or favour any any of Best Pic nominees. Did we really fail to work out this crucial detail on the AFFA Planning board? Perhaps we should discuss it there before folks get too far into their presentations. "I'm ready for my close-up now Mr. Winterbottom."

Excellent job, Adam, particularly w/ the stills--but what was the tally for Best Director? Given Cronenberg's upset win, I'm probably not the only person who'd like to know. First reaction to the results: Sin City wins for Art Direction...what art direction, Carla Gugino's rack? If I'm not mistaken, a majority of this flick was done with green screen. I suppose costuming falls under Art Direction, but trenchcoats and lingerie hardly make this puerile, nihilistic wallow AFFA-worthy. Even Batman Begins winning in this category would've made more sense. But I'm happy to see Maria Bello win something (and see the atrocious Crash completely shut out). And since the terriffic work of Ronald Sanders was overlooked by AMPAS, at least he copped the Editing AFFA. Most of all, it's good to see the awards spread out (especially after last year's ESOTSM tidal wave. Cracking good, people! |

Woo-hoo! And not just for frontrunner Brokeback Mountain, but also for A History of Violence galloping half a length behind on the outside track. I also gave the edge to Cronenberg, Bello, and the film's Editing...even the Score (Gustavo's was fine, but Howard's was finer). Beautiful job on the layout Adam, although yeah, it sure would be nice to see the breakdown of that eyebrow-raising Director vote. We sure had some other close votes too (Actress was by a hair - now I feel kinda bad that I didn't see The Squid and the Whale before voting commenced). Likewise for documentary, and again, sorry I did not get to see Grizzly Man...as much as I loved the movie March of the Penguins, I thought it was more effective as 'experience' than 'document'. BTW Guy, I believe Art Direction is about the overall 'look' or 'style' of the film, as opposed to Production Design which is how all the elements are combined to achieve that (where's Dana to spell this out?). If I've got that distinction more or less correct though, then Sin City's win does make sense - that movie was all Art Direction...permeating every aspect of the live action and effects work. It was a one point upset. Best Director David Cronenberg - A History of Violence -22 Oliver Hirschbiegel - Downfall -15 Ang Lee Brokeback Mountain -21 Robert Rodriguez - Sin City-8 Steven Spielberg - Munich -7 I think one of the reasons "Penguins" won is it was the only thing some of us saw, so we gave it a point.

The director tally is now added. Was disappointed by the lack of success for Downfall: 10 nominations and winning just for foreign film. Really thought Bruno Ganz gave the best performance I've seen in years so was hoping he'd somehow upset Heath Ledger but I guess that was wishful thinking. |

No more disappointing Adam than the strong support A.I. had here going in to the nominations, and yet was totally shut-out from the awards. That film was on enough lists, just not high enough...with wide support, just not deep enough. Same thing happened with The Downfall I think. For most of last year it was my own number one choice, but a very good, or even excellent film like this is not quite the same as a phenomenal one, and Brokeback delivered an unexpected year end punch on many, many lists. It's useful to note that there may be a very sound reason for this. So I don't know what's to gripe about here...for a change, there was just more consensus regarding some very notable film work...and at least we didn't snub A History of violence. Well I'll trade a Downfall success for an A.I. shutout I suppose! No real gripe. At least there was some thought in people's votes this year. Last year people seemingly listed ESOTSM in every eligible category regardless of whether it was worthy! Brokeback was at least upset twice (Michelle Williams cannot really be considered an upset - it wasn't close). I would still like the awards to be even more spread out though. |
