Hi all,

Are we all up for this again this year? I will not be able to put as much time into things as I have in the past but will once again be happy to oversee the nominations phase. Would anyone be willing to take over as soon as I've posted the nominees? I'll ask my go-to-guy CJ first. You up for it again CJ?!

I think we've pretty much got ironed out any confusion and other misgivings over the last few years. In fact I don't remember any significant rule changes last year at all and it all worked well.

This board exists so that we can get a schedule sorted and for anyone to post questions or proposals. Please do so over the next few days.

And before we go any further take a look at the 2006 AFFAs review.

Not sure whether we want to do presentations again, though I think most are in favour. If so then the ceremony will almost certainly overrun, as ever, but it is nice to have an optimistic target I think!

Anyway assuming that schedule is okay you have just over a week to get anything cleared up.

This is normally the time to ask about eligibility on films that have a bit of a confused released date.

Feel free to post some 'For Your Considerations' as well.

I'll ask about the eligibility of The Lives of Others. It beat out Pan's Labyrinth for the Foreign Film Oscar last year, but didn't get wider North American release after last year's AFFAs.

Is it possible they'll postpone the Oscars due to the writer's strike? Doing them like they just did the GG would be incredibly lame. Not sure if we'd want to have that in mind when we're scheduling the AFFAs but that would give people more time to prepare.

I would think that they'd fight tooth and nail to rescue the Oscars, considering that many companies have already paid hefty fees for commercial airspace during the ceremony, and how many films would lose millions by not having their Oscar wins heavilly promoted via a star-studded event.

The Lives of Others

Had 1 screening in L.A. County for Oscar purposes, but didn't get a commercial release until 2007, so I'd consider it a 2007 release (just as I'd consider 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days a 2008 film for this purpose).
You want to be fooled.

I've very quickly scanned last years noms and not only did The Lives of Others not get shotlisted, but I think I'm right in saying not one person even nominated it for Foreign Film nor in any other category. I'd therefore say The Lives of Others is eligible for nomination this year.

Not sure about 4 Months... - think I'll see it this week but if it hasn't openend properly in the States then we could count it out.

I'll rule on The Lives of Others. It was eligible in the Online Film Critics Award following a prolonged discussion, for the reasons Jeff mentions.

Okay, well that was painless. This board will stay open and is the correct location for any queries that may arise during the whole process. This is not the correct board for nominations.

So are we extending the deadline for nominations? If we're going without big presentations, there's less need to start the AFFAs a full 3 weeks before the Oscars. That'll give me time (maybe) to see The Assassination of Jesse James, Sweeney Todd, Ratatouille, etc. Plus, hopfully a few of you will be able to check out Persepolis.

Yeah, I'd go along with that. Some of these movies come out on DVD next week.

I think we've commented but not fully decided if we're having presentations this year, but I'll suggest not to have them. I'm willing to tally the votes and prepare a presentation for all the winners though. The presentations, however, have become more of a pain lately than they are enjoyable, what with delays, and many people backing out in the last minute. That said, if everyone agrees, I can do what I suggested above (tally the votes and present a results page.)

For the record, last year I ended up filling up for 6 presentations, aside of the 4 I was already set to present. Now, I don't say this to point fingers because this is all voluntary and I'm sure most of us have real lives out of here that demand more attention than an online forum. But when you like things well done, it's exhausting in the end to fill up for those that back out in the last minute.

I think my thoughts on this are well known but for the record I don't think presentations are worth the hassle.
