As for this year, here's where to ask questions ahead of the awards. Eligibility questions are commonly asked for example. Last year we ditched presentations which, in my view, was overdue. Although they've been great in the past, more recently they simply cause loads of hassle for whoever it is whose in charge of the post nominations section (invariably CJ) who has to fill in for AWOL presenters. Also the thing overruns massively and people tend to forget that it's even underway. That said, if there's a groundswell of opinion that people would like to bring back individual presentations, let's hear it. |

Proposed Schedule: Nominations open: Monday 26th January Nominations Close: Sunday 8th February (2 whole weeks to nominate!) Voting begins: Tuesday 10th February Voting Ends: Tuesday 17th February AFFA Awards: Sunday 22nd February (same day as the Oscars, but only one will capture the imagination of the public) No presentations makes things a lot more relaxed. Previously I've given 1 week to nominate but that has never seemed enough, hence 2 this time. Any objections to any of that? |

Finally, I will do my usual and tally nominations and post the list of nominees. Usually CJ does the post nominations stuff but I'm happy to do it as long as I am not organising presentations and presenters etc! Did you still want to do it CJ - ie count votes and prepare a presentation page - or shall I?! I really don't mind either way. |

The way it has worked in the past is that lead and supporting nominations for the same performance all count towards whichever bracket gains the most noms. Thus, for example, Winslet receiving 4 lead nominations and 6 supporting nominations would count as 10 supporting nominations, whereas 8 lead and 1 supporting = 9 lead etc. |

How'd I miss The Fall? It must have opened in my area for at most a week or two. Did this film ever get a wide release? Its distributor should be shot. I have to think that seeing the DVD on a small screen can't do the film justice. |

I've never even heard of The Fall, and I like to think I follow films a little more closely than the average person, so god knows how anyone else heard of it. IMDb tells me it was released over here on October 3rd. Who knew. Have added it to my DVD remtal queue but doubtful I'll see it before AFFAs since it's not been released here yet. |

Carlo, Nicola, and Adam... My first awareness of The Fall was in the late spring/early summer of '08 while I was waiting for another movie to start (which might have been Iron Man actually). Although the vaguely weird 1-sheet for The Fall didn't exactly do it for me, I popped in for a few minutes during one of the early hospital scenes just as the fantasy storyline was beginning. To my surprise, even out of context I thought those snippets were intriguing, so I made a mental note to see The Fall the following week. Unfortunately, within the span of mere days, it was already gone. I kind of forgot about it after that, until about a week before Christmas while I was shopping for my Blu-ray supply to get me through the '12 days of Christmas'. Without hesitation, I snapped up the only BD in the store, and it was the first out of that batch I watched. It's still difficult to verbalize that experience...the imagination and beauty of this piece just floored me...I mean, I was alternately "oohing and aahhhing, and laughing and crying." And it was startling...nothing on screen in '08 had come close to that magnificent cinematic ambition. So I started digging into how this project came about, and why something so special could apparently just 'fall' through the cracks like this on an International scale... For more info, check out Roger Ebert's Interview with Tarsem...preferably after you've seen the film, because I definitely think there's some benefit to not knowing too much about it going in. Well Nicola, during the summer of '82 when it seemed audiences only wanted to see warm-fuzzy SF-fantasy (à la E.T.), the unrelentingly sombre and reflective Blade Runner was a HUGE B.O. flop. However, because of home video and theatrical re-releases over the years, it has slowly and steadily evolved into one of Warners all-time top money-earners. Wizard of Oz is probably the most profitable *flop* of all time. Although most movies that outright fizzle at the B.O. are deficient in some critical way, sometimes very good films simply fail to find their most appreciative audience via that venue. I think The Fall will be one of those cultier works that will problably have a long afterlife on disc as it gets discovered, and rediscovered. "And then his siggy just went *POOF*"

Doc: Yep, I remember that. Another similar example that same year was one of my personal favorites-John Carpenter's The Thing, although I doubt it was ever a hit. My favorite film of 2007 was The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and it made less than $20 million world-wide, despite overwhelmingly good critical reviews, so obviously quality doesn't always translate to good B.O. However, my comment really had more to do with my sympathies for Tarsem's out-of-pocket loss.... . |

Actually Nicola, I almost included Carpenter's The Thing in that blurb as another example of 'flops that eventually aren't'. Basically, that one had much the same afterlife as Blade Runner, minus the theatrical re-releases. The Thing has been available in every home video format, including laserdisc and both HD formats, and has been given 3 releases on North American DVD alone. So this picture has morphed from Carpenter's dark folly, into one of Universal's evergreen home video properties. But you're right, quality really has nothing to do with B.O. performance anyway...especially in the case of The Fall, since its theatrical release was handled by a very inexperienced outsider, Roadshow Attractions (which alone, probably explains a lot). Me too. His performance was that movie...IMO it would have been Hulk-style dreck otherwise. At this point Downey Jr's only serious competition for my top spot is from Mickey Rourke. On both their heels, are Lee Pace and Sean Penn. The rest (DiCaprio, Langella, Eastwood, Pitt) are just the 'usual suspects' in what struck me as typically contrived and overly telegraphed Oscar-gimme roles. "And then his siggy just went *POOF*"

Yeah, but he was just Robert Downey Jr. being Robert Downey Jr (one could accurately say the same about Eastwood, to be fair)--sarcastic, dry, and detached. I'm glad he was cast, because he elevated the movie above what it should have been, but I don't think his performance was necessarily anything spectacular. What he did in Tropic Thunder required far more range/versatility. And it certainly doesn't touch what, say, Sean Penn did in Milk. |

Well, mostly I agree with you Alex, but I just think Downey Jr.'s creative contribution to the success of Iron Man as a successful narrative has been w-a-y undervalued. So whether he was allowed to riff on his own personality improvisationally in this project, is kind of irrelevant to me...in context, his acting choices worked beautifully, and sustained an otherwise somewhat thin concept.* I'm trying not to fall into the trap of dismissing the considerable thought and creativity that went into that work - or its value - simply because it was within the comic book genre. * Most of this introductory storyline was about him evolving into HIM...and until the end, there was very little sustained action of Iron Man confronting/combatting the baddy. I liked when the old austronaut turned into a baby who travels the space. The part with a computer (stolen from Eagle Eye...not) was scary too but they deserved it because he wanted to befriend them and they wanted to shut him down after the first mistake.
