Created by: C.J. (thief) on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 01:44 pm

Vote for the good, the bad and the crappy from 2002! Here is where we'll nominate the movies and performancs that were really worth your $8 (or $9...or $10). Vote on the final list of nominees!, and bestow the highly-coveted and prestigious AFFAs during our own online gala.

The Schedule

1) The Nomination Period begins January 1st and ends at midnight, Monday, January 27, 2003. All nominations must be posted on this topic by 11:59pm on the 27th (Eastern Standard Time).

2) The Voting Period begins January 28 and ends at midnight, February 19, 2003. All votes are sent via secret ballot at carlogc68@yahoo.com. I must receive your ballot by 11:59pm (PST) on February 19 for your vote to count. All ballots are final, so vote only when you're ready.

3) The Awards show begins February 20th. Awards will be presented by you, the voters.

See the next post for more details on Award Categories and other logistics.

This post was edited from vornporn's past year header. Kudos to him.

For the list of categories, see the first post.

Okay, I would have presented during the past week, but it was Spring Break, and I spent six wonderful days in New York City, so I have some new inspiration for my presentation.

So now is Julianne Moore now the first two time winner here at the aboutfilm/pathfinder awards?

If I remember correctly, Nicole Kidman won the Best Actress AFFA last year for her work in both Moulin Rouge and The Others.

While we are waiting, let's have a word from our sponsors:

With the 2004 elections just round the corner, perhaps you would like to see how a mature democracy conducts an election?

Tony

What I mean with two-time winner is if I remember correctly Julianne won Best Supporting Actress at the aboutfilm/pathfinder awards for An Ideal Husband and Magnolia. So is this the first time that we have had someone now win the more than once now. So I think she has two so is she the first one though?

Brian rushes out on to the stage. He is bedraggled and mussed and has bags under his eyes. He had planned to wear a tux, but he could not have been so lucky. His tux was ripped to shred by some angry dogs he had come across on the street on his way to the venue. So now, he stands at the podium, tired and out of breath and wearing just his boxers, a wifebeater with black socks and shiny dress shoes. On his arms and legs are cuts that are bleeding.

For the past couple of weeks he has been readying his presentation. But after the violent dog attack, there isn't much left. All he has are the remains of a few mechanical spiders and a pilot's cap. He's is too tired to do the faux temper that he had planned. And his sparkly dress? Well, that's another story. He was supposed to show up in a beat up old car, but that wasn't about to happen because the battery died and people won't stop to help anyone because they're all BASTARDS! His hobbit friend, Elijah Wood was, sadly enough, eaten by the vicious dogs.

But now, Brian has finally arrived and is ready to present his award. The only problem is that he doesn't have much in the way of a visual. So, instead, he discussed it with the stage manager, and they are going to show clips of the nominated FILM that the five nominated directors have made over the past year.

The light dims, and a big screen is lowered from the ceiling, on it are the words 'BEST DIRECTOR'.

Paul Thomas Anderson, Punch-Drunk Love: We see clips of Adam Sandler and Emily Watson kissing, Adam Sandler and Luis Guzman in a grocery store, Philip Seymour Hoffman looking tired, Emily Watson looking cute, and finally, a picture of Paul Thomas Anderson wearing headphones around his neck.

Alfonso Cuaron, Y Tu Mama Tambien: Maribel Verdu having sex with Diego Luna, Maribel Verdu having sex with Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna having sex with his girlfriend, Gael Garcia Bernal having sex with his girlfriend, Maribel Verdu having sex with Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal.

Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: Hobbits, hobbits, Liv Tyler, hobbits, hobbits, Cate Blanchett, hobbits, hobbits, and (you guessed it), hobbits.

Rob Marshall, Chicago: Catherine Zeta-Jonez and "All That Jazz", "Cell Block Tango", "Funny Honey", "Roxie", "Mr. Cellophane", "We Both Reached For The Gone", and the very end of "Hot Honey Rag", picture of Rob Marshall teacher Jones and Zelwegger how to dance.

Steven Spielberg, Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can: Tom Cruise and Samantha Morton hugging each other, Tom Cruise on the run, Lois Smith in the green house, the spiders, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Garner, Christopher Walken, and Leo running down the street in his youth.

Back to Brian: and the winner is....at that exact moment, Paul Thomas Anderson jumps up and yells "It better be me you assholes!" and then vorn pulls out a gun and shoots him. Alejandro weeps. Brian, unphased by this turn of events opens the envelope and says the name of the winner:

Steven Spielberg for 'Minority Report' and 'Catch Me If You Can'

Sorry about the slipshod presentation. Graduation is looming around the corner and I'm getting kind of bogged down. I wish I could have done a better job fo you guys. Here are the totals:

Spielberg: 7 votes
Marshall: 5 votes
Anderson: 4.5 votes
Cuaron: 3 votes
Jackson: 0.5 votes

(Someone voted for a tie._

Interesting. Was it the one-two punch of two solid films? Or could he have won based on only one of those films?

In some ways I think it would be more meaningful to limit directors to one film in a given year.

Would agree but there was a vote before the awards and the majority liked the 'body of work' option.

Well, I should've posted this earlier, but anyway...

zookie has sent me his votes for Best Presentation of the AFFA's. If anyone else wants to participate, just send them to my yahoo acount (affa_thief@yahoo.com).

An interesting note you might want to consider (thanks, zookie)... Perhaps you can split your votes in Best HTML-based presentation and Best Text presentation, and finally a Best Overall presentation. Let's see what consensus we can reach about this. That is if this is still a go...
